Make it about the farmer

My name is Mukurima Muriuki. I grew up in Kenya under the tutelage of my grandfather, the man I was named after.

He came from a generation that knew a very different Africa. He told me stories about growing up under colonial rule, when Africans worked land they did not own and lived under systems deliberately designed to deny them opportunity.

Then came independence, or Uhuru or Freedom.

For families like ours, land became more than soil. Growing coffee became more than farming. It represented possibility: the ability to work your own land, provide for your family and build something that could outlive you.

But there is an uncomfortable irony.

Some of the world's most extraordinary coffee still comes from African soil, yet many of the people who grow it remain the least rewarded people in the cup.

Joro exists because we think the farmer deserves better.

And then we added a little bass.

We love great coffee.

But we also love Afrobeats coming through the speakers. Amapiano basslines. Long conversations. Beautiful African design. Lagos energy. Nairobi nights. Johannesburg cool. Accra swagger. Addis soul.

We love the Africa the world is discovering—and the Africa Africans have always known.

So we started naming coffees accordingly.

Afrobeats. Amapiano. Ethio-Jazz. Ngoma. Kwasa Kwasa. African Queen.

Because why should African coffee be presented without African personality?

We cannot celebrate Africa without forgetting the hands that make the cup possible.

That's why we work to source exceptional African coffee while building relationships that value the people growing it. We believe farmers deserve dignity, communities deserve opportunity, and extraordinary coffee deserves to be traced back to the people and places that created it.

We care about sustainability.

We care about how our coffee is packaged.

We care about giving back.

But above all:

We care about people.

Because before coffee becomes something you hold in your hands, somebody had to grow it in theirs.
